Wet Soil, No Problem: Swift Tank Installation at Smith’s #182 in WY

Project

This project entailed the installation of two Xerxes underground storage tanks at a new Smith’s Fuel Center location. Despite several site complications, the tanks were successfully set and covered in a single day—a testament to the coordination, resilience, and expertise of the project team.

Location

Smith’s #182 — Rock Springs, Wyoming

Story

This installation came with its fair share of challenges. Excavation revealed groundwater just six feet below the surface, requiring the construction team to run six 3-inch water pumps continuously for over a week to maintain a dry work zone.

In addition, soft soil conditions complicated the movement of heavy equipment. To address this, the team began stabilizing the entire lot, ensuring safe access for setting and backfilling the tanks.

Thanks to close coordination and flexibility from all teams involved, the project stayed on track. The Xerxes tanks, including a 20,000-gallon unit and an 18,000-gallon split tank, were set and covered in a single day—an impressive outcome given the site conditions.

Completion

Xerxes underground storage tanks were set on Thursday, July 24, 2025.
